Kali Umaltana
Education of teenage girls and supporting them to handle the teenage related issues is extremely important. “Kali Umaltana” is one such noble activity conducted by Decent Foundation. The teenage girls, especially in the villages are not aware of issues related to personal hygiene, mental health, menstruation cycle, etc. The objective of this activity “Kali Umaltana” is to support teenage girls in the age group of 10 to 25 years. These girls are educated to handle the various mental, psychological and psychological problems.
Teenage girls have to face a lot of changes in their lives both psychological and emotional. Most of these problems are related to the hormonal changes occurring in the body and menstruation cycles which start around this age. Teenage girls are confused and troubled due to these bodily and mental changes occurring within them. Still the society is not equipped to talk about these problems freely. Teenage girls residing in villages are the biggest hit as they are completely lost, uneducated about these problems and above all they have no one to guide them.
Through this program “Kali Umaltana”, the foundation members undertake various activities which would support the teenage girls in the villages and help them solve their issues. Firstly, the girls are educated about the bodily changes and menstruation cycles, the challenges that they have to face due to these changes and the ways to handle these issues positively. They are also educated about importance and ways of maintaining personal hygiene during their periods. A team of about 40 Lady Doctors talk to these girls and clear all their doubts about menstruation cycle and support them to overcome the problems and challenges that they facing. The doctors have come up with a very handy and useful book that addresses the doubts of the growing girls. This book is given to the girls free of costs so that they could refer to it whenever required. This initiative helps the girls who are shy and cannot express their doubts freely. Eco-friendly sanitary napkins are the distributed to these girls. They also have to be taught how to use and dispose the sanitary napkins properly.
About 15000 village girls have been benefitted through this program and the task goes on. This benevolent program has made the lives of girl children in the villages not only easy but also safe and healthy. ‘A healthy girl will lead to a healthy nation’ – is what we at the foundation strive for.
